Do not fix roads with firework sales

To the editor:
State legislative bodies are considering legislation to legalize sales of class C fireworks in Iowa. I am against legalization of class C fireworks sales to pay for road work.
First, we should dispel a lot of disinformation. Fireworks are legal in Iowa. Our laws allow each individual community to regulate shooting fireworks. Your local fire department and your local government are responsible for allowing or disallowing fireworks display permits based on their own criteria.
Most permit holders are required to have training to get their permit. This training makes sure that the individuals involved with fireworks have a basic understanding of the fire hazards associated with displaying fireworks. There are fireworks sellers in Iowa that will sell class C fireworks to people with the required display permit.
Also, it is morally wrong to use fireworks to pay for road work. If our roads need work, taxes based on road use would be appropriate. Stealing from Paul to pay Peter is what got our government in the mess it is in today. Our state legislature has lied to us time and time again about temporary and/or permanent revenue generation. I remember when 100 percent of the gambling revenue was going to go to our schools and our property taxes would be lowered. What happened to all that cash?
I happen to be a member of local fireworks clubs (Stump Town Shooters and the Iowa Pyrotechnic Association) and enjoy fireworks. I just don't think our legislative panel is considering worthwhile legislation.
