Diverse backgrounds still needed on council
Nov. 29, 2009 12:29 am
One of the strengths of this new government was supposed to be the diversity of backgrounds of the candidates it could attract. We are close to losing that advantage.
Two candidates in the runoff election bring perspectives no one else in the race has. Pat Shey would be the only council member, other than Mayor-elect Ron Corbett, who has children in our local schools. And Aaron Saylor, at large, would be the only candidate under the age of 40. These are important perspectives.
Without them, we have turned city politics over to a single-minded group that cannot possibly represent many of us in Cedar Rapids.
