Direction of nation’s economy very troubling
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Dec. 16, 2009 11:19 pm
I am deeply concerned with the direction being taken with our country's economy. The frivolous bills now in Congress on Cap and Trade (a tax on the poor and middle class) and on the health care bill are prime examples of the foolish legislation before our senators and representatives. These are bills President Obama backs.
Also, the president seems inclined to substitute unemployment insurance for jobs. He is talking jobs subsidized or controlled by the government. With everyone on the dole, no one will feel safe speaking out.
The president is willing to ration health care for people who have spent a working lifetime paying for it.
In the matter of jobs, it is an economic fact that the private sector, small business specifically, is responsible for producing jobs that will last. They don't need government subsidies; they need tax breaks that allow them to operate profitably.
The honesty and integrity of our legislative bodies is being challenged by the philosophy of the Fairness Doctrine, a thinly veiled attempt to silence dissenting views.
The pork handed out for the determining Senate vote on health care would be named bribery in a world of honest critics. This should be illegal.
