Diabetes is a trendy lifestyle option

So, the University of Iowa is opening a gigantic new diabetes research center, its goal being 'to find treatments and a cure for the increasingly common disorder,” The Gazette reports ('UI will dedicate new diabetes center today,” Aug. 23).
The reporter forgot to add, ' ... and almost entirely preventable.” (Obviously, the subject of the proposed research is the Type II diabetes epidemic.)
Anybody regularly subjected to all the televised pharmaceutical ads that should be banned would conclude that the disease is just another trendy lifestyle option, given the array of gadgets and potions dedicated to serving this 'niche market.” It seems corporate America lines one pocket enticing its victims into making execrable personal choices, and the other helping them mitigate the consequences of their bad decisions. (To paraphrase a long-ago pundit, nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.) Meanwhile, where is all that 'personal responsibility” we keep hearing about?
One can only imagine how many animal lives will be sacrificed in the course of this misappropriation of resources.
