Democrats punishing Trump in criminal courts might set senseless precedents

In the perception of many Republicans, the Democrats are using the legal system to punish the former president with state and federal prosecutions. For the Democrats the former president is a tar baby, exemplified in the presidential immunity case before the Supreme Court.
Instead of punishing the former president, the court may instead grant him total immunity for official acts. Which means all acts of the present and future presidents will be official acts. The only recourse against a corrupt President will be impeachment — which is held hostage by politics.
How long before a president — any president — deems an opponent or critic to be a “clear and present danger” and orders a drone strike? The Supreme Court is on the verge of handing a president a license to murder, answerable only to a partisan Congress made up of two warring factions.
And the Democrats — instead of setting an example for the Republicans and impeaching a senile and corrupt president, instead cling to him in order to beat the corrupt former president. A person who is only tolerated because of his perceived ability to win the next election.
The Democrats will be the ones to make presidents into kings by accident, aided by the law worshiping, common sense ignoring Supreme Court. The right answer before the court is the obvious answer: everyone is subject to the same laws all the time. No one is above the law in a free society.
