Court decision alarming; leaders can be bought
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Feb. 9, 2010 11:29 pm
The U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, threw out nearly a hundred years of legislation designed to control corporate election manipulating.
At a time when corporations have extraordinary economic power, the court is allowing them to use that power to attempt to control the outcome of elections. We, of course, would have nothing to worry about if our elected officials were immune to outside pressure, but the concern over the decision implies that our representatives can be bought.
