Cost of fire station land is government waste

I believe most of us are disgusted with how our national elected officials have mishandled the federal budget and debt for many years.
We have a perfect example in Cedar Rapids of federal waste. The City Council approved purchasing land for the new central fire station (which we need) at almost 2 1/2 times the assessed value. Members of the council, please don't justify the purchase price by stating that FEMA will be paying the bill and not the taxpayers of Cedar Rapids. FEMA's money comes from tax dollars.
Two assessors stated that “the property often goes up when government decides it needs it.” Why - is government wasteful?
