Contraception access is vital

As a college student who does not plan to start a family anytime soon, access to contraception is vital. Fortunately, since the Affordable Care Act, this accessibility has improved.

Thankfully, the ACA can provide FDA-approved contraception methods, sterilization procedures and counseling to women who wish to avoid unwanted pregnancy. Innovation in pregnancy prevention - such as hormonal and device-driven methods - has made the practice safer, effective and affordable. The gains made in coverage not only have made a positive impact on my reproductive health, but on the lives of expectant mothers as well. Some health insurance plans even provide car seats, diapers and access to specialists conveniently through mobile devices.

To help maintain routine preventive care and health practices, annual well-women visits are provided by the ACA. Breast cancer screenings, counseling and genetic testing also are covered, making it easier for women to access preventive care.

The range of women's health issues covered by the ACA is extensive, and we as a society should encourage the innovations and transformations taking place for women's health and a brighter future for all.
