Pesticides used for purely cosmetic lawn care pose significant risks to public health and the environment. Numerous studies highlight the dangers these chemicals present, particularly to children, whose developing systems are highly vulnerable. Pesticide exposure has been linked to developmental issues and potential long-term effects.
With Iowa's rising cancer rate, it's time to take a stand. Beyond human health, the environmental impact is alarming. Pesticides harm pollinators, essential to our food supply and biodiversity, leading to reduced populations of bees, butterflies, and other crucial species. This decline disrupts ecosystems and compromises the balance of nature, threatening the resilience of local environments.
Additionally, pesticides contribute to water contamination, impacting the quality of drinking water and aquatic ecosystems. The accumulation of these chemicals in our waterways can lead to serious ecological damage, affecting not just wildlife but also the health of our communities.
I am writing to spotlight Good Neighbor Iowa, a non-profit statewide public health education initiative advocating for pesticide-free lawn care. Good Neighbor Iowa educates and empowers residents, schools, and communities to prioritize a pesticide-free approach. Together with Good Neighbor Iowa, we can create healthier, safer, and more vibrant neighborhoods.
