Compromise is how legislation is created

Judging by the complaints from both the left and right about the health care reform bill, and by the Dec. 30 Gazette editorial cartoon, a lot of folks have forgotten how legislation is created in a democracy. It's called compromise - you do something for me, I do something for you. We hammer out an agreement.
That's the way it works. Each side fights for what they want, but in the end neither side gets everything it wanted. Unless you want a king or dictator ruling America, that's how it has to be. It's nothing new.
There's a famous saying, from 1869: “Laws and sausage are two things you do not want to see being made.”
