Comments about Postville uninformed

As a former city council member, I never know whether to laugh or cry when highly placed, unconnected officials publicly comment about Postville. Published by the leftist Forward: “A congresswoman has joined ... to pressure a controversial Iowa kosher meat company to open up dialogue with the community. ... Jan Schakowsky, an Illinois Democrat, wrote one of a number of recent letters to the new owners of ... a kosher slaughterhouse in Postville. ... The company was the subject of a massive immigration raid. Community leaders in Postville have complained that the company's new CEO, Daniel Hirsch, has refused to meet with them to discuss the company's plans.”
On Sept. 23, Schakowsky wrote: “I understand that Postville business, civic, and community leaders are ready to take steps to ensure that your success happens in accordance with human and labor rights. I strongly encourage you to meet with the Postville Community Benefits Alliance.”
I called Schakowsky's office. A few days later, I was called by her assistant. Like Hirsch, she was too busy to talk to me. I thought Jan misinformed and possible duped by special interests. Her assistant assured me that she is aware the city of Postville, the chamber and others had already met the owners.
I think one good turn deserves another. I spoke with the mayor; we are prepared to assist Schakowsky with a task force to advise them how to control Chicago's teen violence problems or wherever our wide range of expertise can assist!
