Columnist shows how the Catholic Church is out of touch

Guest columnist Jennifer Bioche (June 13) wrote a perfect example of why so many people believe the Catholic Church is out of touch. In her defense of the church's stance regarding women and homosexuals' roles in the church community, she compares homosexuality to adultery, stealing, lying and murder.

As if that isn't bad enough, she says that the “practical” reason women shouldn't be priests is because “we don't need pregnant priests.” This is offensive to me on so many levels it's difficult to know where to start.

I am a nonpracticing Catholic, a married woman and a working mother. Can you imagine making the statement, “we don't need pregnant lawyers,” or “we don't need pregnant doctors?”

Women fought the battle long ago for the right to work in positions traditionally held by men. The fact that we exclusively carry the children brought into this world should not exclude us from these roles. One of the reasons I find it difficult to attend a Catholic Mass is because I can't stand to listen to the lamenting about the lack of priests, and the closing of parishes. If the church would allow women priests and married priests, those problems would be solved.
