Column ignored good aspects of Christianity

I was saddened by Leonard Pitts Jr.'s Aug. 8 column. First, by the truth Mr. Pitts reminded us of - that Christianity has sometimes failed to reflect the love and compassion of Christ. We individual Christians, and Christian institutions and organizations, have often fallen short of what God asks of and desires for us.
Second, I was saddened by the alienation and hostility Mr. Pitts communicated. The Christian community, the “Church,” is made up of fallible human beings, “sinners” if you will. It's always been that way. Yet with God's forgiveness and grace, together we try to stay the course. Unfortunately, Mr. Pitts ignored the parallel and greater history of goodness and blessing brought to the world through the Church. The world would be a dismal and chaotic place if not for Christianity. Christians established the first schools and hospitals. Christian churches and groups work tirelessly to help others. The mission of the Church, to tell and live out the love of Jesus, has never changed. And Jesus calls us to not go it alone, but to live in communities of faith.
To “quit being a Christian” (Mr. Pitts' words) is not the answer. My answer is to work to improve the Church and grow in faith and love together. In Jesus, there is always hope, always a new day.
