On Nov. 5, Iowa City voters have an opportunity to elect Rockne Cole to an at-large seat and start City Council in a new direction.
I met Cole at a meeting of the Iowa Coalition Against the Shadow, a group he co-founded to oppose The Chauncey at Gilbert and College streets. I was impressed by his energy and commitment to doing things the right way: listening to many different viewpoints and choosing the most responsible course for the whole community. He understands the impact a major building project has on its neighborhood and refers often to the city's comprehensive plan, which provides guidelines for responsible city development. He is deeply concerned when these guidelines are abandoned in deference to ambitious developers.
In his work as an immigration lawyer, he advocates for the underrepresented to make Iowa City a more inclusive community. As a council member, he will work to protect the integrity of all neighborhoods and support projects that enhance the quality of life for everyone.
I've lived in Iowa City nearly 40 years, and I've grown tired of councils that talk about serving the interests of everyone while subordinating them to the wishes of a select few business people. We need a council responsive to all of us. Please join me in voting for Cole on Nov. 5.
