Closing of REACT Center a real loss

On Aug. 14, the REACT Center was closed. This center accepted used computers from local businesses, refurbished them and then gave them free to schools and non-profit agencies such as small town police departments, libraries and nursing homes in Iowa. The center was started and supported by Rockwell Collins for 17 years. In that time, 35,000 computers were donated to approximately 700 agencies. The center had only one paid employee and an annual budget of $90,000.

Over the 17-year period, the center had approximately 265 volunteers and each year they gave 7,800 volunteer hours. Because of budget constraints, these organizations were unable to purchase computers for their students and clients; through this program they were able to procure relatively new computers at no cost.

After 17 successful years, Rockwell Collins has chosen to terminate the program. This is a real loss to our community. There still is a need for computer support especially to schools in these tight budget times.
