City officials want their hands in our pockets

Marion Mayor Paul Rehn has joined the chorus with Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett to take “option” out of a sales tax not yet expired. A five-year commitment was too long, let alone another 20 to go unchecked by voters. Rehn, what is the problem with the state tax system? Why do you head off the term “windfall” as you ploy for funds? A police station built in 1984 is suddenly vintage, insufficient? Voters should demand full details instead of accepting vague monologue.
Cedar Rapids City Manager Jeff Pomeranz proposed more property tax hikes. Every city official wants their “hand in our pockets” to solve problems that need more creativity, efficiencies boosted and working the state capital steps.
Creating a good job market builds a better tax base. We need sunset terms on laws and taxes.
