Chuck Grassley offers mixed message on citizenship

The Gazette reports ('Birthright citizenship targeted,” Oct. 31) U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley acknowledged birthright citizenship as 'settled law.”

However, the article then quotes Grassley in regard to 'a debate among legal scholars about whether that right extends to the children of illegal immigrants.”

'I would like to read their legal opinion,” Grassley said.

How confusing! Does (or doesn't) the Senator support the right of birthright citizenship?

If Grassley truly is unsure whether this is indeed a human right, the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, enacted July 9, 1868, should resolve that question: 'All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.”
