Change the ending of legislative session
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Jun. 9, 2011 12:37 pm
This year's state legislative session has been a dismal failure. Early on, the new sheriff and his deputies made it clear who they thought were the outlaws and have tried to make them pay for their crimes.
This began by quickly eliminating approved positions for nursing home inspectors that had not been filled. Then their aim was on the preschoolers running amok, so their proposed funding was cut, as well as, the K-12 schools and two- and four year colleges they would take aim at next.
One would think this would have been enough, but no, another target popped up - the unemployed and underemployed. The decision not to apply for federal funds to extend unemployment benefits - brilliant - that will teach them to be out of work. But still not enough, let's close local work force offices. Surely the lesson will be learned then.
I don't think many Iowans will like the way this story ends. I certainly don't.
Iowans take care of our most fragile residents, we value our children's education and want them to use it to improve on prior generations. We want to help our neighbors having a rough patch, not throw obstacles in their way.
If you want to change the way this story ends, then contact the sheriff (515) 281-5211 and his deputies at (515) 281-3221 (House) or (515) 281-3371 (Senate). Let them know this is not the way Iowans treat each other.
