The Center Point-Urbana baseball/softball complex is in desperate need of a major overhaul. For spectators, the rough, uneven terrain is a hazard, especially for those with mobility issues. The dugout roofs and press box placement make it almost impossible to find an unobstructed view of the field. Restrooms are not handicapped accessible, parking is inconvenient, the concessions stand is small and inadequate, and workers must climb a ladder to enter the press box.
For the players, the field is unsafe. It has always been on a slant which has worsened over time. The right field foul pole sits 7 feet lower than the left field pole. The drop-off behind first and second base is so severe that players have been injured trying to make routine plays. The same can be said for the slope from the first base/right field baseline to the out of play fence. Every year, the coaches, players and school staff work tirelessly to make the field playable, but they are fighting a losing battle against the effects of water and gravity.
The complex is embarrassing, but on Nov. 5, voters can do something about it by passing the bond issue proposed by our school board. Passage would rectify all these problems and address several other issues where we have been lacking. I encourage all CPU residents to ask questions and educate yourselves about this bond issue. Let’s level the playing field and vote “yes” for our kids and for your legacy.
