Cedar Rapids residents demand a senior center
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Dec. 28, 2011 11:06 pm
There are 47,000-plus seniors in and around Cedar Rapids and Linn County. The city and county have used tax money for dog parks, animal shelters, boat harbors and trails, but not one penny for a senior center.
The city is going to ask us to approve a 1 cent local-option sales tax for 10 more years in March. Yes, we need it, but if they cannot provide an adequate senior center within a year of the vote, we should vote against it.
I am asking all seniors and anyone interested to write letters to their council members or county supervisors. Demand that we get something back for our money besides higher taxes. Some of us are in our 80s and cannot wait for the second largest city in Iowa to do the right thing.
