Can’t we do more to protect children?

The subject in question is the lascivious acts committed against our most helpless citizens and our failure as a society to reach any solution to the problem. Why we are unable or unwilling to protect our children from such lewd acts has become a mystery to me.
This crime is being perpetrated by all ethnic groups throughout our nation and needs to be addressed accordingly. Whether or not this problem is hereditary is beyond me. What I do know is that the victims themselves develop many unusual symptoms - some become male/female prostitutes, some have sexual dysfunctions, and I'm sure in some cases become molesters.
However, continuing to put our problems on the back burner or treat it as if it's a mentally ill child we would send to the basement when company comes over won't solve anything. In order to bring more awareness, help will be needed from every resource available, from the media all the way to the Legislature.
Don't get me wrong, public humiliation (sex offender registry) brings about awareness. However, it doesn't address the physiological reasoning why someone would commit such an act.
I challenge those in power to help eradicate these atrocities.
