The Linn County League of Women Voters is instrumental in educating our community. They are a respected source of nonpartisan candidate and election information. Their candidate forums and legislative forums are opportunities for the community to become an informed electorate. That only works if the candidates actually show up in these public forums.
My Iowa House District 79 has a contested race in November. The Linn County League of Women Voters held a public forum on Sept. 24 and invited all candidates. Tracy Ehlert, the Democratic incumbent, was present and clearly articulated her thoughts on a number of important issues. Her opponent, Republican Barclay Woerner, chose not to attend the forum. It would seem to me that a serious candidate for state office would want to take advantage of an opportunity to speak directly to the people of his community. Where was Barclay Woerner?
My vote will go to Tracy Ehlert, who shows up and listens to the people. Someone who is accessible and values communication with her constituents.
