Cameras fleecing travelers
The Gazette Opinion Staff

My friends and family travel quite frequently through Cedar Rapids. In my opinion, your city's handling of the speed cameras on Interstate 380 is not for safety but for fleecing travelers who come through your town.
First off, you have an out-of-state New York company managing the fine system. Your city government officials loudly threaten to ruin the credit rating of people who don't pay these “manufactured fines” without due process and proper representation in a court of law.
If the city of Cedar Rapids would have done its homework, it would have read how Arizona is abandoning this same type of program. It was sold a bill of goods also - cameras and the technology - and forgot about our Constitution and proper legal collection protocol.
My contacts and I will tell as many people as possible of your city's arrogant scheme. I will tell them to “boycott C.R.” when traveling through “$peed Trap City.”
