Cameras don’t bother law-abiding drivers

Jul. 2, 2010 12:01 am
The Rev. Ronald Roland from Evansdale gets my vote for Whiner of the Year (letter of June 24 regarding the Cedar Rapids traffic cameras). I don't want to disrespect his noble profession, but the obvious solution to the traffic camera issue is to stop at red lights and obey the speed limits. I should think that a man with his title would understand the peace and freedom that come from simply being a law-abiding citizen.
As for the risk of a rear-end collision when someone stops abruptly for a light, that would be the fault of the car behind that was following much too closely. No reason that should ever happen if you simply maintain a safe distance and watch the light.
Yes, these cameras are raising revenue, and I applaud it, since almost all of it is provided by drivers who either don't care about the law or are just not paying attention. I thank them for their financial support of our community, but would suggest instead a simple donation to the city, which would avoid the risk of an accompanying collision.
