C.R. council’s spending costing Iowa taxpayers
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Aug. 2, 2011 5:16 pm
Mayor Ron Corbett is quoted in the July 28 Gazette as saying, “Local taxpayers won't pay diddly squat for those two projects (new central fire station, restored Paramount Theatre). Absolutely zero.” Apparently, Iowa has become the only state that is exempt from federal and state taxes.
I'm no expert on tax policy, nor am I particularly well versed in the sources of the money being used for these two projects, but I suspect that there are federal moneys being pumped into these projects.
It is disingenuous of Mayor Corbett to use the term “local taxes” to hide the fact that it is still the taxpayers of Iowa who pay for the City Council's out-of-control spending.
