C.R. animal shelter needs continued support

Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control has lost the one person who stepped forward to effect the great changes that we see today at our shelter. (Former city manager) Jim Prosser listened to complaints and concerns of many citizens and rescue groups.
Had it not been for him, the voices of citizen advocates might not have been heard. He placed Animal Control under the realm of public safety with new oversight, management and a fresh way of thinking. The shelter now has a vibrant volunteer corps that supplements manpower.
The animals are very well cared for. The adoption rates are phenomenal, and the euthanasia statistics are exceptionally low. We have a shelter and control program to be proud of.
Mayor Ron Corbett has said he would like Linn County to take a more active role in animal control and to partner with the city in building the new animal shelter at Kirkwood Community College. He even suggested a non-profit group run the operation. Why? What can a non-profit possibly do that we aren't already doing well?
I think a better course would be for Corbett and the Council to pick up where Prosser left off, and give Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control the support they need to continue serving the citizens of Cedar Rapids and our homeless animals.
