C.R. again lets down its senior population

In regards to the Dec. 29 letter “Cedar Rapids residents demand a senior center”: This individual is fed up with a city that totally ignores its seniors. I agree with him but lots of luck.
I am one of a number of individuals and organizations who has been trying for years to get our city to recognize this problem, but to no avail. Frankly, if it doesn't help downtown, forget it.
Then the flood came, which affected us all, and we went along with “we just can't afford it now.” Then lo and behold, the powers to be suddenly could afford more than $70 million for an event center and hotel, boat harbor upgrade, etc. But not one thin dime for seniors.
A number of us have given up on the city ever doing anything. The county, however, seems to recognize the problem and is at least looking into doing something.
I have an idea. Maybe we can take the profits from the event center and later build a senior center. But wait, the event center is never expected to make a profit.
Oh, well, let the next generation worry about it.
What a sad example of community planning and leadership.
