Break the law, face consequences
The Gazette Opinion Staff

I read the Feb. 4 article on the proposed banning of traffic cameras by some Republicans, including state Sen. Brad Zaun of Urbandale, and had to laugh. It is unfortunate that Sen. Zaun chose to ignore the local/national data on traffic cameras and sponsor a state legislative bill banning their use after his son received a speeding ticket (in Cedar Rapids).
Perhaps if he had reviewed the traffic camera statistics before his son exceeded the posted speed limit and the large signs warning that the speed limits were photo enforced, he would not have proposed the traffic camera legislation. Instead, he seems to endorse that it is OK to violate the speed limits that our Legislature has determined to be safe and prudent. The traffic cameras have no bias; they don't care about your race, gender or age - they just take a picture if you are going excessively over the posted speed limit (on Interstate 380, it appears that you need to be going a minimum of 11 mph over the posted limit).
I was taught that breaking the law has consequences - apparently, members of our Legislature have been taught a different lesson.
