Beneath our feet lies a hidden lifeline that is seriously threatened by the arrival of mega data centers that plan to draw millions of gallons of groundwater daily to cool their servers. Our aquifers support farms, families, small towns, and local businesses. Once they’re drawn down too far, the damage can’t be undone on a human timescale.
In Iowa, we understand what it means to take care of the land and pass on something better to the next generation. That same mindset should guide how we protect our groundwater. We need common-sense policies that protect our water: guidelines to use recycled treated wastewater instead of groundwater, limits on large-scale withdrawals, transparency in permitting, and a plan to ensure our aquifers can continue to serve future generations.
Iowa water belongs to Iowans. Let’s keep it that way.
