As a recent college graduate, I’m entering the workforce with excitement for what lies ahead. Like many young professionals, I’m eager to start building my life. I’d like to purchase a car, save for a home, and eventually start a family. That’s why I’m especially grateful for the recent passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill.
By permanently renewing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, lawmakers have ensured that young adults like me won’t face a larger financial burden just as we’re starting out. Thanks to the higher standard deduction, I’ll owe less in taxes, allowing me to save and invest more than if the TCJA had been allowed to expire. As a single tax filer and Iowa resident, I should save a little over $3,000 that I otherwise would have paid in 2026 because these tax cuts were made permanent. This is money that helps me move toward independence and stability. Investing those resources early also gives me the chance to build exponential growth over time.
Some critics claim the OBBB doesn’t help the lower and middle classes. But from my perspective, the benefits are very real. I want to thank Iowa lawmakers — especially Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks — for standing firm. Their leadership helps ensure that young people like me can step into adulthood with more opportunity, security, and confidence in the future.
