Better ways to spend money than on raises

It is that time of year again when the county's elected officials are up for another raise. It is the same old story where a few commissioners (picked by those who receive the raises) put on their woe-is-me robes and justify a significant raise for the supervisors and other elected officials.
I also read an article where the supervisors did not take too kindly to Linn County Auditor Joel Miller's attempt for an internal audit position. Are they afraid something may turn up? Too bad they can't be as adamant about accepting a raise.
This is not a good time to do this as there are others who need help more. All anyone is worried about is an amphitheater by the river and other mundane projects that won't benefit the flood victims. Perhaps the new mayor and Don Karr can pound some sense into the big spenders.
