Better conditions might have prevented events

Regarding the tragic events at Postville and the aftermath that detains some of the former employees: It would seem reasonable that a unionized Agriprocessors would have prevented the exploitation of the workers by enforcing safer working conditions, decent hours and pay, child labor laws, and proper documentation.
Hopefully, under new management, the employees will have a brighter future and will allow a legitimate and honest business to prosper by treating our fellow human beings with compassion and dignity.
