To the editor:
Professor Max Rothschild's Nov. 30 guest column 'Today's challenge: Feeding the world” left out an important aspect about feeding the world: consumption of meat, dairy and eggs.
If we significantly reduced this livestock production and instead grew food to feed to people, we could reduce hunger and limit species extinction, water pollution, ocean dead zones and rain forest destruction.
We could significantly reduce greenhouse gases. All those benefits and we could also stop contributing to the suffering and death of billions of animals.
Chris Hedges wrote a column at Truthdig about these issues. Read it at http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/saving_the_planet_one_meal_at_a_time_20141109. Also, watch the documentary 'Cowspiracy” at http://www.cowspiracy.com. The U.N. report 'Livestock's Long Shadow” says that we need to move toward a vegan diet to save the world from hunger and the impacts of climate change. Please consider making changes in your diet.
