Before you vote for president, vote in this year’s elections

With presidential candidates parading across the state, it’s easy to forget the important elections this fall. Iowans will vote for city leaders and school board members with early ballots Oct. 18 through Nov. 6. Voters can cast a ballot early at their auditor’s office or designated early voting locations. On Nov. 7, Election Day, polling locations are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
This year, more than ever, it is important to research candidates. There are some who are trying to divide us over book bans and bathrooms while ignoring the learning needs of our students and the needs of our teachers and administrators. There are some who are driven by out-of-state dark money groups who want to tear down our public schools instead of working for their success.
School board candidates have a direct impact on our communities. They are an integral part of our school system. When our school board functions well, our schools function well.
School board members must focus on providing safe and healthy learning and working environments, access to all, and most importantly, the best tools and resources for our students and educators to help them succeed. Our schools, communities and families win when we reject hatred and divisiveness and vote for candidates who believe in fully funding our schools, providing kids with an honest education, and providing a safe place where all students are welcome and can be their authentic selves.
