Be proud of direction of C.R. school district

As I prepare to step down after a term on the Cedar Rapids Community School Board, I want to thank my supporters for their confidence in my leadership. I also want to express my gratitude to fellow board members. Each has been thoughtful, engaged and determined to do what he or she thought was best for the students, staff, taxpayers and district.
I am proud of the accomplishments we have made over the last three years, particularly after the devastating flood. District employees went into overdrive last summer to find new schools for so many of our displaced students. This school year, we will be able to welcome many back to Taylor Elementary School. We also have hired an excellent firm to help guide the community and the board on whether to replace or repair our other flood-damaged buildings.
The board spent many hours diligently searching for someone to replace a champion for student achievement, Dave Markward. I believe we have made an excellent choice in our new superintendent, Dave Benson. He has chosen an excellent associate superintendent, Gary O'Malley.
I thank the employees of the district, hundreds of volunteers, students and their families for their commitment to excellence in education.
Students, parents and taxpayers have a right to be proud of what we've accomplished together and the direction that we are headed.
