To the editor:
As children, we were excited for Christmas. The snow, the food and the gifts made us happy. What happened next? We are still looking.
Some look to sports, concerts, relationships, lottery tickets, casinos, food, drugs, bars and money. The anticipation gets us excited. We even pray for the answers.
The answers are in the New Testament. Start at the first word and keep reading until you read the last word. If you stop and ask yourself what something means, tell yourself to be quiet and keep reading to the end. What will you learn? The answers God wanted you to learn. The gifts of the Holy Spirit to be with you.
I was fortunate to become a good friend of Harold E. Hughes, governor of Iowa and U.S. Senator, until his death in 1996. He shared his belief on life. He stated, 'I have two priorities - to love God and love myself. In that context, I can then love others and enjoy my total life.”
Remember you are a child of God this Christmas, a gift you can give and receive every day of your life. Be excited and smile.
