Be aware, get screened on World AIDS Day
Nov. 29, 2009 11:47 pm
Tuesday is World AIDS Day, when we remember those who have lost their lives to the disease and celebrate those who are living with it.
The Iowa Center for AIDS Resources and Education (ICARE) strives to enrich the lives of those affected by offering practical, emotional and financial support as well as prevention education. On Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., ICARE and Johnson County Public Health will be offering free Rapid HIV testing at the Iowa City Public Library. Counselors will be available to talk about HIV/AIDS prevention and other concerns you may have. Testing is open to the community; registration is not required.
In 2007 approximately 7,000 people around the world were infected every day with HIV. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, in December 2008, there were 2,045 people living with HIV/AIDS in Iowa, with 108 new cases diagnosed that year. To learn more about ICARE or free HIV Rapid testing, visit www.icareiowa.org or call (319) 338-2135.
