I read with interest the Aug. 27 article “Bringing back barter.”
Each year in May, Friends of Hickory Hill Park in Iowa City holds a plant sale in my backyard. At first, I fussed about what price to place on each plant. Yes, we made money with each item priced, but since we adopted the barter method, our income from this annual sale has increased three- or fourfold. If a customer offers an amount and we don't feel it is high enough, we barter.
Since we are an all-volunteer group and the money from the plant sale goes to fund work projects in Hickory Hill Park, it is important that we make as much money as we possibly can. This plant sale annually brings in $1,600 to $2,000. For more information, visit www.hickory
hillpark.org.
