As Woodstock rocked, soldiers kept dying
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Sep. 8, 2009 12:15 am
I have been reading all the anniversary articles on the Woodstock event with interest. While I'm sure it was fun and provided lasting memories to those who were there, I think it's worth mentioning what was happening 8,429 miles away during the festival, Aug. 15-18, 1969.
According to “While Woodstock Rocked, GIs Died” in the August 2009 issue of VFW magazine, 109 Americans lost their lives during those four days. The last day of the festival was particularly deadly - 35 of those servicemen perished.
As the article summed up: “When you hear talk of the glories of Woodstock - the so-called defining event of a generation - keep in mind those 109 GIs who so nobly served.”
Thank you veterans.
