An example of current health care failing

Here's one true story that illustrates why it's imperative to make health care accessible and affordable:
A middle-aged Cedar Rapidian held two part-time jobs; neither provided health care coverage. She couldn't afford the premium for individual coverage. When she started feeling ill, she began applying for full-time jobs in order to get health insurance benefits.
At this time, she knew she should not go to the doctor. With a diagnosis before insurance coverage, the treatment for her illness would be considered a pre-existing condition and her expenses would not be covered.
Several months later, she was hired with a company that provided health insurance. Because of the waiting period, she couldn't take advantage of the insurance until one month after her hire date. When she was finally able to see a doctor, her diagnosis was cancer and it had spread. She was finally able to pay for her health care expenses. Unfortunately, it was too late. She died a few months later. She knew the system and played by the rules - ultimately, it cost her life.
To our legislators, remember: The U.S. health care system affects all Americans, not just the rude, vocal minority, but all people - some of whom may no longer have a voice. Do we want our current health care system to continue to serve as the “natural” selection process in America?
