Allow supervised use of marijuana in hospital

I have not tried marijuana, but I know people who have and they say it works wonders (for some medical conditions).
My mother died recently of cancer and people often told her that she should use marijuana to help her with pain and nausea. Although the Congress considered it to have 'no accepted medical use,” many states have legalized medicinal marijuana.
Why could people with medical purposes not use it in a hospital, being observed by nurses and doctors? People take all sorts of drugs for pain and other symptoms for being sick and some of those can be more addictive than marijuana.
My mother battled cancer for almost two years and she lost her appetite and had lots of pain. If she could have taken marijuana legally, could it have helped her feel better? While it may not be the perfect drug to take, it seems reasonable to look into it.
