All abuse deserves public awareness, laws

A recent Gazette headline indicated lawmakers are looking to 'boost” animal cruelty laws. For years, I and others have advocated that Iowa needs a comprehensive elder abuse law. This highlights the failure of legislators and the governor to deal with elder abuse.
On Monday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Coralville Public Library, Dr. Brian Kaskie will discuss problems associated with elder abuse, offer possible solutions and listen to input from those in attendance.
Kaskie and Leonard Sandler, both from the University of Iowa, recently published a study, 'The Elder Abuse Pathway in East Central Iowa.”
Hopefully this event, sponsored by the Johnson County Task Force on Aging, which is a part of the Heritage Area Agency on Aging, will increase public awareness and help combat this problem.
