Advertising signs create an eyesore

To the editor:
It seems like a lot of signs are springing up all over town in the right of way advertising various things.
They are illegal according to the Cedar Rapids Municipal Code, but the companies putting them up seem to ignore the fact that it is illegal to put them in the right of way. Some of the signs are repeats of signs that have been put up in the past and they probably feel that there is little or no consequence if they do put them up again. It is a shame that these businesses do not obey the Cedar Rapids Municipal Code, but they have gotten used to the fact that they will probably only lose a few signs each time.
To me they are an eyesore and tend to make the streets look tacky. I have contacted the City of Cedar Rapids about this. I have even offered to remove the signs that I see in the right of way, but was not given the permission to do so. Residents should be able to remove the signs to make the streets not look so cluttered.
What a shame it is that some businesses seem to feel that they are above the law and create such an eyesore for us to look at when we drive through the streets of Cedar Rapids.
