Regarding Jim Williams' March 15 guest column, titled “Generosity bubbles over float”:
I applaud Williams' enthusiasm and community spirit and SCORE's gratitude for volunteers to spread the word of the organization's good work. However, I note two examples of wrong thinking.
One, handing out candy (at a parade) when childhood obesity is a huge problem, not to mention tooth decay.
Two, using a “heavy plastic bag.” These bags will not decompose in the landfill. Maybe they won't even make it there, but will blow against fences and litter the streets and alleys. Plastic bags and bottles are harmful in every way and we must be more enlightened about packaging.
Why hand out more junk, as in junk food and junk bags, that only exacerbate our problems with obesity and non-biodegradable litter? Please advertise in a more responsible way.
