Accurate registration is proof voters need

In the recent primary election, I was asked to show identification. And I am so sorry I did not refuse. The Iowa elections website lists reasons voter ID may be requested. The only category I fit is “the precinct election officials do not know you.” How many voters have friends sitting at the sign in table? Which means most of us may be asked to show ID even though Iowa does not have the voter ID law - even though having our name on the list of registered voters is sufficient.
Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz hopes to have Iowa pass a voter ID law. A great number of us senior citizens would find that one more reason to stay home and not vote since many no longer have a driver's license nor are willing to present utility bills, bank statements or Social Security checks. Yes, we will use absentee ballots and wonder if we did it right so it will be counted.
Why is the voter ID law necessary if the voter registration list is accurate? People are either on the list or not. If not, they may use the provisional ballot. Let us keep it as easy as possible for citizens to vote.
