His lived experience as a Syrian immigrant gives him profound insight into the struggles many face, while his professional expertise as a transportation engineer at the Iowa DOT equips him with practical problem-solving skills our city needs.

Newman's leadership as former board president of the Iowa City Human Rights Commission demonstrates his dedication to justice. He doesn't just talk about protecting human rights—he has fought tirelessly for LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, tenants, the unhoused, and free speech advocates.
