AARP is great way to stay involved

As seniors, we sometimes feel we cannot make a difference individually. For me, there is a voice in belonging to groups. The local AARP chapters are ways to get involved and partner with the state and national AARP. Chapter goals provide community service, communication, fellowship and advocacy.
The Cedar Rapids AARP Chapter is fortunate to be partnered with the local Heritage Agency on Aging. Through these groups, volunteers and advocates have the opportunity to participate in the legislative workings and the health care changes proposed locally, statewide and nationwide.
The Heritage Plan has as its goals, briefly:
1) Enable older Iowans and their families to make informed decisions about existing home and long-term health options.
2) Enable seniors to stay in their own homes as long as possible.
3) Empower older Iowas to stay active and healthy through Older Americans Act Services.
4) Ensure the rights of older Iowans and prevent their abuse and neglect.
The local AARP and Heritage Agency on Aging recently joined local leaders for a useful project called, “2009 Survey of Linn County Iowa Residents Age 50+ on Livable Communities.” Also, statistics are being used for improving Linn County and providing for residents' needs.
For more information on AARP or Heritage Agency on Aging, call (319) 398-5559.
