A lesson in sportsmanship

Violence sullied the news in Iowa last week as a couple of high school basketball players turned postgame handshakes into a brawl. Contrast that with the actions of Karly Weiss, a freshman at Loras University, a Xavier High School graduate and my granddaughter.

Loras had just lost an overtime women's soccer match in the NCAA Division III Final Four tournament. The NCAA provided individual trophies, but not enough for every team member. They were handed out numerically by jersey number. Karly received her trophy but realized a teammate who had played significant minutes during the match did not receive one. Karly gave her trophy to this teammate, a lesson in sportsmanship for athletes at every level.
