A familiar face arrives after the storm

About 12:30 p.m. Aug. 10 the storm hit our street. Forty minutes later we placed a call to our insurance agent, not knowing it would be our last call for several days.

We soon realized we had no electricity, no internet, no mail, no cellphone service, no landline, no cable and no TV.

We had no way to contact anyone beyond our neighborhood since the streets were impassible. We were literally in the dark on Monday night and Tuesday and had no official communication, no situational updates and no forecasts from anywhere. After a near sleepless Tuesday night, we were standing on the front porch at 6 a.m. Wednesday trying to plan our next move.

All of the sudden, a familiar face came through the tangle of trees and rubble. It was Tom Hufford, our Gazette carrier with both the Tuesday and Wednesday newspapers. He apologized for the late delivery of Tuesday's paper and quietly, sincerely said, 'Good luck.”
