A call for rational, respectful letters
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Oct. 20, 2011 12:57 pm
Two letters on the opinion page of Monday's Gazette demand response. Both contain misinformation, assumptions and language designed to inflame attitudes toward individuals or groups.
The label “Flea Party” is not only derogatory, it is untrue. “We are the 99%” is a spontaneous, heterogeneous movement, not a party, whereas the Tea Party is an AstroTurf organization supported by Freedom Works, which is supported with big money from the Koch brothers.
This writer also accuses demonstrators of being dirty. The truth is they clean up after themselves, even scrubbing garbage cans. Participants also would be aghast at generalizations made about their religious and political orientations.
The writer of “DNC leader's actions might open some eyes” offers no examples of Debbie Wasserman Schultz's actions that concern him. Instead, the litany of epithets about Democrats reveals only the writer's anger and possible insecurity around strong female leaders.
Let's hope writers of future letters will tone down the inflammatory language and discuss issues rationally.
